Somethin’ Else, a coming out and coming of age story.

In 1960, riding the Rock and Roll dream into the future meant giving up everything you thought you knew in the past.

Set on the cusp of the '60s, when everything seemed gray and staying put felt as scary as getting out, this is Jim's story - a working-class lad grimly determined to get to university, but dreaming of nights on the town and the promise of rock and roll.

Jim feels trapped in the post-war housing development, the routine of work and school, and with the girlfriend he can't quite manage to fall in love with. Until he meets Edward ― full of passion and possibility ― and in an instant, Jim's world is turned upside down and nothing is the same.

Edward doesn't seem to notice rules or barriers and helps Jim to see the world through fresh eyes. Jim and Edward long for escape, but in the end, escape means different things to each of them and brings with it as many questions as solutions.

Falling in love is a heady experience, but Jim needs to decide what really matters most to him escape from working class life down the beaten path ― or something else ― something that only Edward can give him despite the consequences.

This poignant historical LGBT debut novel from E.S. Parkinson faces the historical truth unflinchingly, with exquisite attention to period detail and language. Not every love story has a happy ending, but anyone who has ever found love where they should never have been looking will also love “Somethin’ Else,” by historian E.S. Parkinson.

I was really into this book. Read it pretty much in a single sitting, though the prose is fairly dense. Yet I walked away from it feeling that I missed something.

Perhaps you had to understand the social setting of poverty in 1960 England. And, of course, we know the opprobrium that greeted anything even slightly gay back then. But I just didn't get it. I didn't get all the various flavors of moral cowardice that drove both MCs to walk away from what mattered.

This book simply ends without a resolution, sort of like a symphony that doesn't return to tonic - it leaves you hanging and feeling a bit cheated.

I wish I could recommend this book more highly because the writing itself is pretty good, but since I didn't really get the point (something about dreams not fulfilled, walked away from, used to get out of poverty - meaning dreams to run away from things, not to run toward anything).

Sorry, it just didn't work for me. I wanted a better outcome for the characters than the author delivered.

The thrill of new young relationships is part of the great ride of life. The twists & turns of it can leave you in twain or richer for the experience. Add to it a difference in social class & a taboo or two, & you've got "something else" to write about.
I found many things to like about this story. First, the language. I liked the fact that the author not only used appropriate slang in the dialogue but also used it in describing scenes. It lent the story a greater authenticity and made it just seem so much more real. Second, the main protagonists are well developed. Third, the story line. It was interesting and engaging. Jim is in his late teens. He has chosen to stay on at school so he can attend university. In the estate that he lives he is the only one of his peers to do so. He feels pressured to follow his peers to leave school and marry his sort of girlfriend. He then meet Edward and they become romantically involved. Throughout the story Jim struggles with his feelings for Edward. Fourth, the story's ending is realistic and appropriate. Finally, good editing and no obvious errors in the time period.

Overall the author has written a good story that is worth reading.

Recommended.
