Who is the 13th Advocate?
Karsten was a violent man at the end of a violent career with no greater ambition than a quiet retirement and maybe a woman to keep him warm. But a gamble over a bottle of beer cost him that dream and sealed him to a bewildering fate as a reluctant and curmudgeonly chosen one.
Irritable, argumentative, and with powers beyond imagining (though he's still not sure how to use them) Karsten now travels the back roads of a decaying empire, bringing his own brand of justice to both the high and the low. And getting grief at every turn from the llama who carries his gear.
In this stand-alone episode
Hunted by a creature from dark desert nightmares, Karsten and Babette flee to the port city of Pryloon to seek shelter among its teeming crowds—or to be specific, in the bed of an old friend. Their only chance is to discover the mage who has summoned their pursuer, and cut his strings before his creature finds them. And hopefully without upsetting their host, who knows nothing of the trouble they've brought to her door.

I came across the first story of this series inside "All These Shiny Worlds" (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01B8IZIM2/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i1) a short story collection that you can get free on Kindle. The author here, Jefferson Smith, is the editor of that collection and he included his own story "The Dowager's Largesse" in it. Out of the many good short stories there, the world I itched to re-enter was this one--the one of Karsten and his llama companion Babette."Demon of the Sands" is a stand alone story in Karsten's world. A fairly quick read (given that it is a novella) the story engages you and draws you into the desert where the story is set. Jefferson seems to be quite good at world-building, which is something I look for in my stories. There is plenty of detail to get lost in and to help you grow the world of the story in your mind with. Jefferson also has a clever sense of humor, and I find myself making laugh/snort noises more than usual when reading his stuff. For a story that is not at all a comedy, this is a treasure not to be taken lightly. The story itself had a satisfying ending, while still leaving you quite well aware that there are plenty of Karsten and Babette stories that may still yet be told.
All in all I think it is worth getting immersed in the stories of "The 13th Advocate", and I plan to read every one that comes out. If you enjoy the craft of storytelling from a reader's standpoint, this is a good series to hang around in.

This story was good. It was funny, dark and I was constantly trying to build the world in my head which is why I read fantasy. Though it is short, it is really entertaining. The lead character, Karsten is familiar to me, like a grumpy uncle that used to work for the CIA. He's got a lot of story in him and I will definitely read the other ones.
